How do I get admitted to Zwavelstream Clinic?

For admission, a referral letter is needed. This can be from your GP, a psychologist, or an ER. Please forward your referral letter to admin@zsclinic.co.za. Once we’ve received your letter, our reception will contact you to assist you further. Please ensure that you have provided us with your correct contact details, preferably a cellphone number and an e-mail address. Your confidentiality is of utmost importance, and the contact details you provide should ensure this.

Do you have an emergency unit or accept walk-ins?

We do not have an emergency unit. In case of an emergency, please go to your nearest ER, as they will assist and contact our hospital directly. For planned admissions, a referral letter is required.

What do I do in case of an emergency?

In case of an emergency, please go to your nearest ER. They are equipped to assist you and will contact our Clinic directly if admission is required.

Do you admit involuntary patients?

Zwavelstream Clinic is a voluntary admission facility. Therefore, we do not accept involuntary admission of patients.

What is the minimum age for admission?

Zwavelstream Clinic admits patients from 16 years of age and older.

Is there a deposit required for admission?

Yes, a compulsory refundable deposit of R500.00 for the room cupboard key and a blanket is required upon admission. This is fully refunded upon discharge, provided the items are returned.

Is admission covered by my medical aid?

Zwavelstream Clinic is a Designated Service Provider (DSP) for most medical aids, and our tariffs are in accordance with Medical Aid Scheme rates. Please note that an authorization is not a guarantee of payment and is subject to change.

How long can I be admitted for under my medical aid?

Psychiatric admission is a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB), which allows for 21 days in-hospital or 15 out-of-hospital appointments. These benefits are linked; using one affects the other. The number of days available will be confirmed once authorization from your medical aid is received.

Will my medical aid cover everything?

Authorization is not a guarantee of full payment. Once admitted, authorization will confirm what limitations and exclusions are applicable. Patients should be familiar with their benefits. Our case manager can advise further after admission.

What if I don’t have medical aid?

Patients without medical aid can be admitted as private patients. A deposit covering 21 days is required on admission. To confirm tariffs and receive an estimate, kindly contact our Case Manager at casemanagement@zsclinic.co.za or admin@zsclinic.co.za.

Are there additional costs for specific dietary requirements?

For patients with Halal meal requirements, there is an added cost of R100.00 per day. This fee is payable upon admission.

What is the average duration of stay?

The average length of stay is between 12–13 days, depending on each patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan as decided by the treating psychiatrist.

What are the visiting hours?

Monday–Friday: 18:30–19:30 (Limited to 3 visitors per patient)
Saturdays, Sundays & Public Holidays: 14:00–16:00 (Limited to 4 visitors per patient).

What should I pack for my stay?

Chronic/Home Medication: A 2-week supply of all your chronic medication in original packaging.
Clothing: Comfortable day and sleepwear, including a gown.
Footwear: Sneakers, comfortable shoes, and shower flip-flops.
Exercise: Gym clothing (not tight-fitting).
Personal Items: Toiletries, 3 bath towels, reading material, and plastic hangers.
Electronics: Devices and chargers are allowed.
Money: Pocket money for the coffee shop.
Please avoid bringing expensive jewellery or valuables.

What is your policy on patient privacy and confidentiality?

We strictly uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with the POPI Act. No information will be disclosed without consent. Taking pictures, videos, or recordings inside the Clinic is strictly prohibited.

What are the rooms like? Can I get a private room?

The Clinic offers shared rooms (2 or 4 beds per ward), each with a bathroom. Private rooms are limited and allocated based on availability and operational needs. Costs for private rooms may not be covered by all medical aids.

Are patients allowed to leave the facility during the day?

When admitted, patients are not allowed to leave the facility. Under special emergency or therapeutic circumstances, a day pass may be granted if approved by both the treating psychiatrist and hospital management.

Is it permitted to continue working or studying during my stay?

Yes. While patients are busy during the day, free Wi-Fi is available for work or school purposes. Use headphones and keep devices off after 22:00.

Can I receive packages or online deliveries?

We do not accept online orders or deliveries (e.g., Uber Eats, Checkers 60/60). Visitors may bring tamper-proof, sealed snacks and beverages during visiting hours. Limit packages to 6 items and 2 x 2L beverages.

What is the policy on smoking and vaping?

Only sealed cigarette packets and sealed disposable vapes are allowed. These are checked and marked on admission. No e-cigarettes or Hubbly-Bubblies are permitted. Patients under 18 need parental consent to smoke or vape.

Are laundry services available?

Yes, outsourced laundry services are available on specific weekdays. This service is at the patient’s own cost and risk.

Are there gym or exercise facilities?

Yes, a basic gym is available for patient use at their own risk. Time slots can be booked with nursing staff.

How does the Clinic handle loadshedding (power outages)?

The Clinic has a generator that provides power during loadshedding. Only designated red plugs are connected. Hot water may be limited during extended outages.

What is the policy on personal and chronic medication?

Self-medication is strictly prohibited. All personal medication must be handed to nursing staff upon admission. Your psychiatrist will manage prescriptions, which are administered by our nurses.

Do you offer assistance with rehabilitation services?

Zwavelstream Clinic is not a dual-diagnosis or rehabilitation facility. Contact us for recommendations on facilities that provide this service.

What if I just want an outpatient appointment?

For an outpatient appointment with a Psychiatrist or Psychologist, contact 010 475 0150 or admin@zsclinic.co.za.

Can I be admitted at the same time as my friend, family member, or spouse?

The simultaneous admission of patients who are family members, friends, colleagues, or individuals with a prior personal or professional relationship is not allowed due to potential conflicts of interest. If such a relationship is not disclosed or identified before admission, one of the patients may be discharged or have their admission postponed. This decision is made with the treating psychiatrist(s) to ensure the well-being and continuity of care for all patients.
