Dr Vasco Ferreira

Introduction:
After completing his medical degree at the University of Pretoria, Dr Ferreira started his training as a psychiatrist at the Weskoppies Hospital in Pretoria. During this time, he initiated the study and was co-author of a study on the “Prevalensie van seisoenale gemoedsversteuring onder psigiatriese buitepasiente by Weskoppies Hospitaal en H.F. Verwoerd Hospitaal” (Prevalence of seasonal affective disorder amongst psychiatric out-patients at Weskoppies Hospital and H.F. Verwoerd Hospital) which was published in Geneeskunde vol. 36 nr. 8 p.5-11.
Although Dr Ferreira is interested in most aspects of psychiatry, aspects of special interests include adolescent psychiatry, substance abuse, organic psychiatry as well as medico-legal and forensic psychiatry
Short summary:
With extensive experience in the management of both inpatients and outpatients, Dr Ferreira has also been involved in several drug trials.

Adolescent Psychiatry
Dr. Ferreira has had an interest in adolescent psychiatry services training as a psychiatrist and has completed a full year's training in adolescent psychiatry. He has decades of experience in the treatment of adolscents with psychiatric disorders.
Organic Psychiatry
rganic Psychiatry involves the assessment and treatment of psychiatric conditions caused by general medical conditions such as head injuries, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions affecting the patient's mood and behaviour
Medico-legal Psychiatry and Forensic Psychology
Medico-legal Psychiatry involves the evaluation of patients who for instance have been involved in motor vehicle accidents to determine the possible psychiatric consequences of the accident. Forensic Psychology involves the evaluation of patients in criminal cases to determine whether a psychiatric condition has influenced the patient when committing a crime. In both cases, Dr Ferreira then provides the court with a document to assist the court in its decision.
