Dr K van Niekerk

“Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. Healing begins when we open ourselves to support, self-compassion and the understanding that mental health is a journey, not a destination.””

Introduction:

As a psychiatrist, my role in patient care is to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions using a combination of medical knowledge, therapy and medication. I work closely with you to understand your experiences, support your emotional well-being, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. The goal is to help you manage symptoms, improve your quality of life, and support your overall mental and emotional health.

Maternal mental health

Maternal mental health refers to a mother's emotional and psychological well-being during pregnancy and after childbirth. It includes conditions like depression, anxiety and postpartum psychosis. These issues can affect both the mother and baby, but recovery is possible with early support and treatment.

Mood disorders

Mood disorders are conditions that affect your emotional state over a long period of time. You might feel very low, as in depression, or experience extreme highs and lows, which we see in bipolar disorder. These shifts in mood can make daily life more difficult, but with the right treatment—like therapy, medication, or both—we can work together to help you feel more stable and in control.

Primary

Geriatric Psychiatry

Old age psychiatry is focused on the mental health and emotional well-being of older adults. As we age, it’s common to face challenges like memory problems, depression, anxiety, or even conditions like dementia. These issues can affect your mood, thinking, and daily functioning. The correct treatment can help patients maintain a good quality of life.
